Defining Terms for Sci-Fi Films
Defining Terms for Sci-Fi FilmsI've just completed the Paperback edition of the movie Blade Runner. It's a fantastic film, and in my opinion it's the best science fiction film ever made. I recommend it to every SF fan. But how do you describe it for a novice? That's an important point. If you're planning to buy the film, then get it right the first time round. Don't ask someone to describe the film - ask them to tell you a little about themselves. For example, if you're looking for details about who the mystery man in the background is, then just ask your friends, or anybody else you can think of who works with you regularly. Find out if they know anyone close by who might have seen the mystery man.Alternatively, what if you're trying to figure out where the final scene takes place? Well, you may be wondering if that makes sense. It does to me, because I know that if I was asked to describe the scene I'd get the same answer from people I work with, or from people I work with regularly, as I got from people I didn't work with at all.Movies are all about relationships. What if there were no film people? I know people like me, I'll call them professionals, would still describe films in similar ways. Like this:Film People: 'Well, it's a Friday night, and it's getting dark, and I've been watching so many movies over the last few days that I don't remember what I was doing the day before.'Movie People: 'I'm bored. It's a boring night, so I'm going to go and get a magazine. 'Sup?'So, if you ask movie people what they liked about the film and what they thought was particularly good, then you're going to get a similar answer. Just ask them what's interesting, what was useful, what was amazing, what did they think was amazing and what do they consider to be a bad thing about the film. Or just ask them what they thought about it in general, and get back to you with their own ideas of the best.
